We are excited to announce a new partnership between the Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF) and Screen Dance International (SDI). This special program, coming to the 63rd AAFF next week, will showcase a selection of innovative dance films in the Bodies in Motion screening, highlighting the close relationship between movement and cinematography.

Curated by SDI, this program features a selection of the best in current and recent international dance film shorts, carefully chosen by SDI’s panel of seven adjudicators. The Bodies in Motion screening traverses a wide range of ideas and expressions, exploring the connection between cinematography, bodies in motion, and dance.

SDI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating dance films from around the world. The organization emphasizes the deep connection between dance and cinematography, supporting dance filmmakers while promoting creativity and showcasing diversity in the dance arts. Award winners will be chosen for this special program, which is separate from the AAFF’s films in competition programming.

A key highlight in the Bodies in Motion screening is AAFF alum Peter Sparling’s film Encore (for the end of the world), which is not only part of this exciting program but is also officially in competition for the 63rd AAFF. This work explores the intersection of dance, bodies in motion, and cinematography and is a must-see for festival attendees.

“We’re excited to share a selection of the best in current and recent, international dance films with new audiences at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Having collaborated with the Detroit Dance City Festival for five years at the Detroit Institute of Arts, we look forward to this new opportunity,” said Joanna McNamara, SDI Director.

The Bodies in Motion screening will be one of the highlights of the festival, complementing AAFF’s diverse lineup of experimental, animation, documentary, fiction, and performance-based films.
