Suitcase of Love and Shame
(Jane Gillooly, 2013, 70 min)
Suitcase of Love and Shame reconstructs a mesmerizing narrative from 60 hours of reel-to-reel audiotape discovered in a suitcase purchased on eBay. Recorded in the decade that would spawn the sexual revolution, the tapes chronicle the details of an adulterous affair. Tender, erotic, and pathetic, the film suggestively foregrounds the recorder as a confidant, witness, and omnipresent participant that the lovers come to depend on, forming a welcome ménage-à-trois. Suitcase… underscores the sexual experience of the time, while mirroring the compulsion to confess indiscretions in today's cyber world and exploring the effects of new recording technology on peoples' lives.
