(Willie Doherty, 2012, 20 min)

First shown as part of dOCUMENTA 13, Secretion was filmed at specific sites in and around Kassel, Germany, where a charged history is obscured by the beauty of nature, and cultivated landscapes are contaminated by untold stories and hidden shame. The so-called Märchenwald (enchanted forest); a meandering section of the river Fulda in an industrial periphery, trespassed on by a motorway; an old, dilapidated city house- all carry their own secrets. Doherty’s video is a meditation on the visible and invisible memory of landscape. – excerpted from an essay by Eva Scharrer in the dOCUMENTA 13 catalog
